Documentary: Outside the Arena

It was hot in Cleveland and it was hot in Philadelphia too. The kind of heat that feels like a burden, weighing you down.

While many Americans were watching the politics unfold inside the RNC and DNC conventions I was outside those arenas in that heat, photographing.

  • RNC convention goers entering Public Square in Cleveland. The Square was a central location for numerous demonstrations, marches and protests and was heavily guarded by federal, state and local law enforcement from across the country.
  • {quote} Berners,{quote} Bernie Sanders supporters who refused to follow his endorsement of Hillary Clinton, rally in Payne Plaza in Philadelphia during the DNC convention.
  • A man steps out in front of the Black Lives Matter march at the DNC in Philadelphia.
  • Demonstrators ride on and march alongside a truck leading the Black Lives Matter march in Philadelphia. Trucks led the procession up Broad Street for four miles to FDR Park across from the Wells Fargo arena, site of the DNC.
  • A police helicopter circles over a demonstration below on the south side of City Hall in Philadelphia during the DNC.
  • Marchers head north on Broad Street towards the Wells Fargo Arena during the Black Lives Matter march at the DNC in Philadelphia.
  • Legal Observers from the National Lawyers Guild were a constant sight on the streets of Cleveland, monitoring the Cleveland Police Department and the 2,800 additional law enforcement officers brought in from around the country for the RNC.
  • Black Lives Matter supporters in a fountain in Public Square in Cleveland during the RNC.
  • Tom Haws from Mesa Arizona and Pam Borden from Raleigh North Carolina share an embrace while cooling off in a fountain at City Hall in Philadelphia during the DNC. The previous day both were arrested along with approximately thirty other members of the group Democracey Spring while conducting non-violent civil disobedience, climbing over barriers outside the convention's restricted event zone and into the hands of waiting police.
  • Protesters and police often ended up facing off. While tensions sometimes rose in the heat and emotion, there were few open physical confrontations. According to Philadelphia police there were only 103 DNC related protest arrests during the convention.
  • A young woman relaxes in a fountain at Public Square in Cleveland during the RNC.
  • A Cleveland police bike patrol detains and checks the I.D. of a man near Settlers Landing during the RNC. Police presence was large, with 2,800 additional officers brought in from around the country to supplement the Cleveland Department. Despite the large numbers, Cleveland Police reported only 24 total arrests related to the RNC.
  • A group of California Highway Patrol on duty in Public Square. 2,800 external officers were brought in to supplement the Cleveland Police Department during the RNC.
  • Unlike Cleveland during the RNC, Philadelphia didn't bring in outside law enforcement during the DNC. Philadelphia also didn't bring out riot gear or militarized equipment to manage demonstrators despite the fact that demonstrations and marches in Philadelphia tended to be larger (sometimes over a thousand) than Cleveland, where demonstrations rarely rose above a few hundred.
  • Outside the barriers around the AT&T transit station near the Wells Fargo Center, site of the DNC convention. Of the few arrests and skirmishes that occurred during the DNC many happened here.
  • Cleveland police conduct surveillance from a rooftop overlooking Perk Plaza during the RNC.
  • Outside one of the gates of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, site of the 2016 DNC.
  • A young girl looks back at the photographer from the back of a truck leading the Black Lives Matter march in Philadelphia, site of the 2016 DNC.
  • During the Black Lives Matter march at the DNC, a woman stands defiantly with raised fist, the traditional Black Power salute.
