2018 Womens March NYC
We'd been waiting a long time for the march to begin, now finally it was starting.
I was shooting inside the barriers along Central Park South walking towards the approaching march. The crowd coming towards me until the first of the marchers, the marshals and physically challenged, in wheelchairs and walkers, began to flow around me. I continued moving forward, shooting, the crowd enveloping me into the march, a wave pulling me into an ocean. An ocean of 200,000 people marching in the street.
Then I heard it. A thunder. Coming towards me was Batala New York, an all women Afro-Brazilian Samba Reggae Percussion band. And they were bringing it. Their drum line pounding out an affirmation of strength. Their energy and dancing a physical manifestation of joy and rejuvenation. They embodied the spirit of this march and they owned it. Fierce, proud, energized and ascendant. They invigorated the crowd, lifting 200,000 spirits on the beat of their drums.
