Documentary: Occupy Wall Street 1 year anniversary

September 17 2012 marked the first anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Supporters rallied to mark the occassion with a series of marches, general assemblies and acts of nonviolent civil disobedience through out the day. Theyended that evening with a "popular assembly" in Zucotti park, site of the movements iconic tent city,where the movement first took hold one year ago.

  • A cadre of NYPD police stationed across the street from Zucotti park in New York City on the morning of September 17 2012, the first anniversary of the Occupy movement. Police presence was heavy through out lower Manhattan. There were sporatic and sometimes violent clashes with demonstrators through out the day resulting in more then a hundred arrests.
  • A young man uses a marker to write down the number of the National Lawyers Guild Hotline. The Guild provides lawyers and jail support to anyone arrested during these demonstrations. When asked the NLG also provides trained {quote}Legal Observers{quote} to monitor police and civil rights abuses during large gatherings, planned actions, and demonstrations such as took place on September 17th.
  • OWS demonstrators begin a sponteneous march down lower Broadway. Marchers and Police played a cat and mouse game through out the day with {quote}sponteneous{quote} marches springing up and Police trying to contain the marches by anticapating their direction and destination then setting up police lines to keep them off the street or blocked from particular locations. Marchers countered by simply changing direction. It went on like that through out the morning.

  • Police presence was heavy through out lower manhattan. Police lines were used through out the day to try to contain various {quote}sponteneous{quote} marchs by OWS demonstrators. Having formed one such line the officers above wait in anticipation of approaching marchers.There were sporatic and sometimes violent clashes with demonstrators through out the day.
  • A woman is arrested after she and the group she was with staged a {quote}sit down{quote} civil disobedience action, refusing to move when directed byPolice to do so.
  • OWS demonstrators stop briefly in front of an office building during a march in lower manhattan, to deride a law firm they say has offices in the building. They alledge that the law firm was intergal in assisting the Sotherbys auction house in union busting activities last year.
  • Police form a line to block the street from approaching OWS demonstrators marching through lower manhattan on the 1 year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
  • A group of wheelchair bound demonstrators rallya growing crowd forming around them after they were detained by police.
  • An OWS demonstrator in lower manhattan on the morning of September 17th 2021, the first anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Police presence was heavy and the emotional affect of the officers was labile,shifting throughout the day encompassing boredom ,disinterest and bemusement  at other times reflecting weariness, fatigue ,frustration  and outright hostility.

  • Two individuals participating in an {quote}Action Spokescouncil{quote} in Battery Park address OWS supporters using the {quote}Mic Check{quote} technique. The Action  Spokescouncil was intended as a means for assessing how the day was unfolding and to decide next steps for actions during the remainder of the day through direct democratic process.

  • Police moved in to guard the enterance to an office building that OWS protesters had stopped in front of during a march to commemorate the first anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. in lower Manhattan on September 17th 2012.
  • On the evening of September 17th 2012 , the first anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement ,OWS supporters returned to Zucotti park, renamed by the movement Liberty Square, for what supporters called a Popular Assembly.
